HWA Racelab have unveiled their second of three drivers for the 2021 FIA Formula 3 Championship with Mexican teenager Rafael Villagomez joining the team.

The 19-year-old raced in French Formula 4, British F4 and the Euroformula Open during 2020 as he searched to gain experience wherever he could.

It was in the latter championship that Villagomez first teamed up with HWA competing in the first four rounds before scoring podiums in both F4 championships and 2021 will see the two parties reunite for an assault on Formula 3.

“I’m really happy and proud to announce that I will drive in the FIA F3 championship with HWA RACELAB,” said Villagomez. “After my first year in Formula, the step will be big but I’m sure that I’m going to learn a lot and that we will do a great job all together!

“Thanks to the team, but also to my family, to everyone who is trusting in me and my manager Tom Claessen who has been helping me since the beginning. I can’t wait to start the season!”

HWA had a relatively successful 2020 in F3 finishing fifth in the teams’ championship with Jake Hughes leading the team with two wins.

But with the Brit no longer competing in F3, the German squad will be looking for a new leader and that may be the already announced Matteo Nannini who will race for HWA in both F3 and FIA Formula 2 this season.

Team Principal Thomas Strick added: “In Rafael, we welcome another promising young talent into our team for the coming FIA Formula 3 season. He has shown that he has the drive you need to succeed, not least with his victory in the Richard Mille Young Talent Academy contest.

“You need that determination in order to be successful in the fiercely-competitive FIA Formula 3 Championship.”
