Lundgaard reinstated onto F2 podium

Christian Lundgaard has regained his second place in the FIA Formula 2 second sprint race having previously had it taken away due to a penalty.

The ART driver was handed a ten second time penalty after he collided with MP Motorsport’s Lirim Zendeli midway through the race which saw the German retire a few laps later with unsustainable damage.

Zendeli joked on Twitter after the race that Lundgaard was ‘pretty into my butt, next time just look don’t touch.’

After the race, Lundgaard pulled into the second place area in parc ferme assuming that position was his, but he had to reluctantly hand back his podium Pirelli cap with the FIA applying the ten second penalty.

But a little after the podium was finished and champagne sprayed, the FIA released their provisional results which still had Lundgaard in second place.

It is believed that he took his penalty when he pitted late on under the safety car and therefore was incorrectly given a further penalty when the chequered flag fell. He was reinstated in second after the issue was resolved which means Matteo Nannini has to wait further for his first F2 points after being dropped from eighth to ninth.

That also means that Oscar Piastri is now championship leader after winning this evening’s race with 21 points, one ahead of Jehan Daruvala who dropped off the podium with Lundgaard’s reinstatement.
