Amaury Cordeel has completed Van Amersfoort Racing’s FIA Formula 2 line-up for the upcoming season. The Belgian is another graduate from the FIA Formula 3 championship, where he finished 23rd overall with zero points for Campos Racing.
Cordeel will join Jake Hughes at VAR for 2022 after he tested with the team at post-season testing in December at the Yas Marina. He clocked a best finish of sixth position in the final session of the test.
“I am extremely excited to make this step up to F2. I got to know the car during the post-season test at Abu Dhabi and it is an impressive drive,” the Belgian said. “The power increase in comparison to F3 is obviously very noticeable, but I felt comfortable behind the wheel.”
“I will put my learnings from F3 to best use and together with the support of VAR, will build up from there onwards. I have been using the off-season to get in optimum shape, both physically and mentally, not to mention the endless hours I’ve spent in the simulator. I feel ready!”
Despite not karting professionally, Cordeel tested for open-wheel single-seater racing at 14-years-old. He debuted in 2017 at the French Formula 4 championship and won the Spanish Formula 4 title a year later with four wins and four pole positions.
He has since competed in the Formula Renault Eurocup as well as the Asian Formula 3 championship before making the jump to FIA Formula 3 last season. His best finish was an eleventh place at the Red Bull Ring.
“After the test at Abu Dhabi, we knew we wanted Amaury in the car. He is very committed to performing and forms a good match with the team. He proofed to be an intelligent driver and learns quickly, something we highly value in a driver,” Van Amersfoort Racing’s CEO Rob Niessink added.
