DAMS’ Roy Nissany weathered the cold and wet conditions of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya to set the fastest time in the second day of FIA Formula 2’s In-Season Testing in Spain.
The Israeli driver beat Trident’s Richard Verschoor to the top spot by half a second, with DAMS team-mate Ayumu Iwasa rounding out the top three with the third fastest time of the day.
While dark clouds brought the threat of rain during the morning session, the track stayed relatively dry for the drivers albeit a brief period of spitting.
Turn 5 proved to be quite tricky in these conditions, with three drivers ending up in the gravel on separate occasions through the session. These were just a few of the stoppages in the morning, with several more being caused by Jüri Vips, Olli Caldwell and Marino Sato on more separate occasions.
Despite this, the grid still managed to get a decent number of laps in throughout the session with sixteen of the drivers passing the thirty lap mark.
Yesterday’s fastest driver, Ralph Boschung, was just under a second off the pace in fourth place with Calan Williams completing the top five with a gap of eight-tenths to Nissany.
The afternoon was met with even more disruptions due to the eventual sprinkle of rain over the lunch break. Normally, the drivers would grit their teeth and head out on the wet-weather tyres but the track was proving too dry for them as well as being too wet for slicks.
Hitech Grand Prix’ Marcus Armstrong set the fastest time of the session ahead of the fastest driver from Tuesday’s morning session, Felipe Drugovich.
The times were around a second off the pace of the times that the grid were setting in the morning session which was due to the lunchtime sprinkle.
The two Carlin drivers, Liam Lawson and Logan Sargeant were on a mission in the afternoon to get track data. The pair of drivers completed forty-nine laps of the circuit each, the highest out of any of the drivers with MP Motorsport’s Clément Novalak completing just thirteen laps which was the least.
The final day of testing begins on Thursday morning, with the drivers just getting another two sessions before they’re off to Imola for round three of the FIA Formula 2 championship.
