The two-time Australian Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen has only entered two rallies so far in his career but now the spark for the sport is fierce as he plans to take part in the FIA World Rally Championship of Rally New Zealand in September.
van Gisbergen’s rally career began in 2020 where he finished fifteenth at the Auckland Rally with a Ford Escort and most recently at the Netier National Capital Rally he drove a Skoda Fabia R5, where he claimed his maiden podium finish in second place with less than a minute and a half away from the winner of Harry Bates.
“Rally New Zealand is my goal, I’m working on it. Having New Zealand back on the calendar is great news, but everybody wants to do it – so getting a car’s not easy.”
However, as he is driving for Triple Eight in Supercars, he has to be careful for what car he will choose for the rally but most likely it will be a Skoda Fabia as he used previously.
“It would be good to get out and do a couple more rallies, that would help to get used to the pace notes and things like that. I want to keep learning, rallying is a lot of fun – but it takes a lot of work with the co-driver on the recce. The dream is to get to Rally New Zealand, but there’s some work to do yet.”
