Jack Doohan has triumphed in another Sprint Race in the 2022 FIA Formula 2 championship with the Hungaroring being the scene of his second win of the season.
The Alpine junior beat the runner-up Jüri Vips by over five seconds to complete the rout, with Charouz Racing System’s Enzo Fittipaldi hot on his heels in third to complete the podium positions.
The Brazilian got the better start from reverse grid pole-sitter Doohan when the lights went out and put himself up into first place at turn one, but the Australian youngster fought back at turn two to re-take the lead.
There was instant drama as PREMA Racing’s Dennis Hauger and Carlin’s Logan Sargeant made contact with each other on the run down to turn 1 and both drivers were forced to retire, bringing out the Safety Car in the process.
The race went green once again on Lap 4 and Doohan immediately showed his race-winning pace by stretching out a healthy two second gap on the rest of the field by the time the lap had ended.
ART Grand Prix’s Théo Pourchaire had a challenging day at the office ahead of him after dropping down to sixteenth during the early race drama from his grid position of seventh.
He quickly started to gain ground, disposing of Roberto Merhi, David Beckmann and Marino Sato as he climbed up the positions. The Frenchman would go on to finish in ninth place, just outside of the points paying positions.
His main championship rival and current leader, Felipe Drugovich, missed out on a podium by just over a second. The Brazilian driver had yet another consistent race which has proved to be the key in previous championship deciding factors.
After previously winning the Silverstone Sprint Race, Doohan was ecstatic to win his second race of the season and add to his F2 career tally,
“The way we managed the Sprint Race from pole, bouncing back from yesterday’s disappointing result, it felt more like more than a Sprint Race win.”
“Last year I was poor on management in the F3 car so it’s good to know that I’ve made steps forward – me and the team. Very happy, now we’ll gather data for tomorrow and let’s see what we can do with the strategy.”
