The current WRC2 class championship leader Andreas Mikkelsen crashed this evening at the EKO Acropolis Rally Greece super special stage in Athens Olympic Stadium after going too fast in a corner and had to retire which is quite costly as the Norwegian hopes for scoring well in the rally slipped away early.

The Norwegian who is driving for the Skoda Motorsport backed Toksport WRT in a Skoda Fabia Rally2 evo, carried too much speed over the bridge and went airborne which lead he couldn´t slow the car down in time before the tight right-hander so he went straight into the safety barrier and damaged the front-left corner of the car.

As he did not manage to complete the stage as he had to pull out from the stadium and without no service before the first leg of the Friday, it is now unsure if he will retire from the rally completely or continue to participate by starting the rally later.

Mikkelsen was not the only driver to have trouble in the stadium, Toyota Gazoo Racing´s Esapekka Lappi also clipped a safety barrier which caused some damage to the Toyota GR Yaris Rally1.
