Albon and Rosenqvist share Portimao Poles

1 Mins read

Alexander Albon and Felix Rosenqvist secured a pole position each during the second FIA European Formula 3 Championship qualifying session of the day at Portimao.

Thai driver Albon, representing the Signature team, set the best time of the session to take pole position for race two, while Rosenqvist, driving for Prema Powerteam, set the quickest second-best time to take pole for race three.

Albon and Rosenqvist share the front row for race two, with the three other Prema Powerteam entries in hot pursuit; series returnee Nick Cassidy qualified third, Lance Stroll fourth and Jake Dennis fifth.

Current championship leader Antonio Giovinazzi secured sixth for Jagonya Ayam with Carlin, just ahead of his American team-mate Gustavo Menezes, while George Russell was eighth for the sister Carlin team.

Dorian Boccolacci made it an excellent session for Signature to qualify ninth for race two, while Pietro Fittipaldi qualified tenth for Fortec Motorsports.

Rosenqvist will be joined on the front row in race three by team-mate Stroll, with Dennis third making it a Prema Powerteam 1-2-3, while Russell moves up to fourth ahead of Menezes.

Mikkel Jensen will start sixth for Mücke Motorsport ahead of Motopark duo Sergio Sette Camara and Markus Pommer, while Fittipaldi and Callum Ilott of Carlin complete the top ten.

Despite setting the best time of the whole session, Albon’s second fastest time was only good enough for twelfth on the grid, but this was still better than Giovinazzi, who will start race three down in fifteenth just behind his team-mate Ryan Tveter.

Charles Leclerc of Van Amersfoort Racing, who currently sits third in the championship standings, had a disappointing afternoon, qualifying eleventh for both races.
