Bradl Quickest in Crash Strewn First Practice

2 Mins read

Stefan Bradl showed his ability in wet conditions again by going quickest in first practice for this weekend's TT Assen as countless riders came unstuck in the miserable conditions.

Rain began to fall at the end of the first 125cc practice session, continuing through the MotoGP session and leaving the Moto2 class with conditions reminiscent of those facing them at Silverstone two weeks ago.

Bradl dominated on that day and was in a similarly unforgiving mood this morning, setting a 1:54.435, giving him a quarter of a second in his pocket over Kenan Sofuoglu. The Turkish rider took advantage of a clearer track as many of the front runners pitted to go second fastest, the only other man in the 1:54s.

Simone Corsi, Bradl's nearest threat in the championship standings, was over six tenths behind in third ahead of Yuki Takahashi in fourth. Andrea Iannone was one of the riders to be caught out by the wet track but was still quick enough for fifth, with Thomas Luthi sixth and Mika Kallio seventh.

British manufacturer FTR had a particularly strong morning session with three more riders joining Simone Corsi in the top ten. Ratthapark Wilairot was eighth quickest for the Thai Honda Singha SAG team, Pol Espargaro was ninth despite apparently injuring himself in a fall, and Kenny Noyes produced one of his strongest performances of the season to finish tenth.

Bradley Smith didn't enjoy the same level of success as two weeks at Silverstone. The Briton had an off-track moment of his own before improving late on to go 22nd. Kev Coghlan ran as high as fourth early on before ending up in 26th, while Scott Redding finished 31st.

Elena Rosell had a difficult baptism as she began her first ever Grand Prix weekend, suffering two accidents in the tricky conditions. Conditions were so tough though that race control called an early end to proceedings after the second Mapfre Aspar bike of Javier Fores crashed with four minutes to go, along with QMMF Racing's Ricard Cardus.
