Top female karter Laura Tillett is set to get her first taste of saloon cars this week when she tests a Renault Clio Cup car at Brands Hatch with front-running UK outfit Total Control Racing.
20 year old Tillett has decided to call time on her successful karting career and is eyeing a move into car racing in 2012. Highlight's of her karting career include finishing fifth in the 2008 MSA Kartmasters Grand Prix and a year later becoming the first British female racer to compete in the karting World Championship.
Tillett, who lives close to Brands Hatch in Kent, has previously gained car experience in single seaters, testing both a Formula Ford and Formula BMW, as well as spending a day with the Williams F1 team in their race simulator in late 2011.
Tillett, who will become the first female Clio racer since 2007 if she joins the series, said: “This will be my first ever go in a Clio, so I'm really looking forward to it. I've still got a desire to race single-seaters but we need to look at all of the options as it's all down to sponsors. I've been karting for nine years so I can tell you everything about that. Being 20, I'm slightly behind some of the others who have moved up to cars already so this is something I definitely need to do now.”
TCR team principal Lee Brookes added: “We're delighted to be able to give Laura her first test in a Clio, she's proven her talent in karts for a number of years now at the top level so we've got no doubts she'll be able to adapt quickly. We're really looking forward to working with her.”
