British Touring Car driver Tony Gilham is to combine his BTCC season with a return to the APR Volkswagen Racing Cup where the Dartford based driver made his name.
Gilham, who last raced in the VW Racing Cup in 2007, will head a multi-car team for Tony Gilham Racing with Richard Kingsnorth, and Andy Wilmot also at the team, which will run Mk V VW Golfs. Gilham said there is potential to add a fourth car to the stable.
After success in the 750 Motor Club MR2 Championship Gilham competed in the VW Racing Cup in 2006 and 2007, first in a VW Beetle, before moving to a Golf for his Championship winning season. He then progressed into the Porsche Carrera Cup GB before graduating to the BTCC last season.
“It all came about because my new garage – Tony Gilham Ltd at Dartford – built a demo car,” he said. “We decided that we'd like to build a race car, were approached by a sponsor, and having decided to come back to the championship several other drivers came along and asked us to run them too. Now here we are with what looks like being a four-car team.”
“I am delighted to be going back to the VW Cup. I've never fallen out of love with the championship – it helped me massively early in my career and now it is time to put something back into it.”
Gilham's first meeting back in the championship will be the over the Easter Weekend (April 7-9) at Oulton Park.
