The Grand-Am Rolex sports car series returns to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the penultimate round for the 2012 season for DP and GT series contenders. The Spirit of Daytona race team driving their Chevrolet Corvette powered chassis stormed to the top of the time sheets during Saturday’s lone qualifying session.
Richard Westbrook in the ocean blue colored prototype lapped the 2.23 mile circuit with a time of 1:21.042 followed closely by defending race winner the “Red Dragon” Gainsco #99 Corvette DP of Jon Forgarty and Alex Gurney. Rounding out the top 3 is the impressive #2 Ford Riley Starworks driver of Venezulen Alex Popow. The top 5 in the DP class were separated by a mere one second.
In the highly competitive GT class a new team leasing a new Ferrari 458 Italia from international GT powerhouse Risi Competizione turned heads as they claimed pole in class with a time of 1:27.594 with former factory Corvette Racing driver Oliver Beretta at the wheel.
They were followed by the ever improving Horton Autosport team of driver Patrick Lindsey who joined the GT field after the 50th Rolex 24 at Daytona in January. Rounding out the top three was defending class champions Brumos Porsche in a similarly prepared Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.
