Optimum Motorsport have announced their first driver signing for the 2013 Ginetta GT5 Challenge season, with Tor McIlroy joining the team for his maiden assault on the series championship.
The former Caterham Academy racer and star of the Birkett six hour event at Silverstone competed with the Yorkshire-based team in the final round of the British GT-supporting series at Donington Park in September, finishing 14th in only his second race in the team’s G40 machine.
McIlroy will now join the team for a full season in 2013, and said: “I’m extremely excited to be driving with Optimum this year, their racing experience and previous success will be invaluable for helping me contend the championship and move up in the motorsport world. Optimum’s passion for racing seems to match my own, so we are set for a fantastically exciting and competitive season.
“My motto in racing is ‘I don’t rewind, I only fast forward: “I think it epitomizes my view on racing, look forward, and what’s behind doesn’t matter”, added the man who was awarded the prize for overtaking the largest number of cars in a single-race in the Caterham Academy last year.
Shaun Goff, Team Principle at Optimum Motorsport added: “Having met Tor through our academy launch back in September, he instantly stood out as being hugely passionate about paving a career in motorsport. So with our huge success in the championship we hope to bring Tor to front of the grid.”
