Rivett Targets Fourth Clio Title After Signing Late Deal

by Simon Paice

Three-time Renault UK Clio Cup champion Paul Rivett has been announced as a last-minute addition to the grid for the opening rounds of the 2013 season at Brands Hatch this weekend.

The 34 year old looked set to miss the new campaign, but an eleventh hour deal means he will now be on the grid challenging for an unprecedented fourth Clio Cup title.

Rivett will once again run with Stancombe Vehicle Engineering thanks in part to backing from PER HIRE, which is owned by former Clio racer Matthew Munson.

“It really couldn’t be any more last minute than this deal, if we’d had any less time left we just wouldn’t have had time to get everything prepared ready to go to Brands for testing on Friday,” said an elated Rivett, “I really can’t believe I’m going to be out there racing this year, to get the call this morning saying we’d be on the grid was a huge surprise, totally unexpected.

“I have to say a massive thank you to Matthew [Munson] and PER HIRE for getting me out there, it’s mainly down to him we’re going to be racing again this year. It goes without saying too, huge thanks to Colin [Stancombe] for working tirelessly on a deal for us to go racing again this year – he really has been working unbelievably hard.”

Rivett has an incredible association with the one-make championship, having made his debut in it back in 2001. Since then he has won the title in 2002, 2004 and 2011, as well as finishing runner up in 2006, 2008 and 2012, with last season seeing him miss out on the title on the final weekend.

The introduction of Rivett brings the number of confirmed entries up to 23 for this weekend’s opening rounds.
