2008 and 2009 Protyre Formula Renault Championship-winning team Scorpio Motorsport have confirmed an initial two-car squad for their 2013 title challenge.
Alongside the previously announced Henrique Baptista, the Loughborough-based outfit have confirmed they will run third year driver Ivan Taranov. The Russian joined the team for the final two rounds of last season’s championship and secured a career-best top four finish.
“In testing Ivan has been looking monster quick, and although he’s doing some races in Formula Renault 2.0 Alps as well, he is committed to the full Protyre Formula Renault season to try and win it,” said team principal Jon Pettit.
“Henrique is maturing really well as a driver, the times he’s been running in testing are definitely good for the top six I reckon. Like Ivan, he’s a great guy to work with so we’re looking forward to a very enjoyable and, hopefully, successful year.”
Scorpio, who will once again be utilising the driver coaching skills of 2009 series champion Kieren Clark, are hoping to expand to a three-car line-up, with discussions currently taking place with drivers for the vacant third seat.
“We’re still looking at running a three car team this year,” added Pettitt. “We’re talking to a few drivers and if we can do a third deal we’ll be very happy. We feel we’ve got a very strong team with Ivan and Henrique, and we’re happy with that, but three cars would be nice. We’ll see what happens in the next week or two.”
