Westbourne Duo Storm To Brands Poles

1 Mins read

Westbourne Motorsport duo Mike Bushell and James Colburn has shared the pole positions in qualifying for the opening rounds of the Renault UK Clio Cup at Brands Hatch.

In a truly vintage Clio Cup session, the field could barely be separated, with 21 of the 23 runners split by less than a second.

It was Bushell who set the quickest time of the session in the cold conditions, his best lap of 52.555s giving him pole for the opening race by just 0.018s from team-mate Colburn. Josh Cook and Alex Morgan completed the top four, both within a tenth of a second of the poleman.

Jake Giddings went an impressive fifth ahead of Josh Files, with triple-champion Paul Rivett slotting in seventh ahead of TCR’s Rob Smith, the front four rows split by 0.256s.

Lithuanian Ignas Gelzinis and Team Pyro newcomer Ash Hand completed the top ten, with series regular Stefan Hodgetts left in a frustrating twelfth.

The drivers’ second best times formed the grid for the second race, with Colburn emerging on top with a time of 52.595s. Only 0.017s behind to secure an incredible front-row start on his Clio Cup debut was Morgan, with his experienced team-mate Files third.

Bushell will join Files on the fourth row for that race, with Cook and Rivett lining up behind them, 0.241s splitting the top six. Giddings and Smith were next up, with Hodgetts an improved ninth ahead of Gelzinis.

Simon Belcher took the class pole in the Masters Cup for both races, sitting fifteenth and fourteenth overall on the grid.
