Karthikeyan Keeps Perfect Record Going In Auto GP

1 Mins read

Former Jordan and HRT star Narain Karthikeyan has won the opening round of the Auto GP series at Silverstone keeping up his so far perfect record at the event.

The Indian Super Nova driver has finished top in every session so far – both practices, qualifying and now the race. However that does not tell the whole story.

Karthikeyan actually crossed the line second behind Ghinzani Motorsport’s Kevin Giovesi, but the GP2 Venezuela GP Lazarus racer was penalised post race for completing his mandatory pit stop on the last lap – a move against Auto GP regulations.

Rounding out the podium were Super Nova team mate Vittorio Ghirelli and Zele Racing’s Tamas Pal Kiss – who was passed for what turned out to be second on lap nine.

GP2 racer Giovesi, who has raced in Auto GP in the past – he gained four podiums in 2011 – was penalised and was classified 13th. However, even with this ‘illegal’ move he finished only three tenths of a second ahead of Karthikeyan who showed stunning consistency for the majority of the race.

He said: I’m happy to have scored my maiden Auto GP win. I found a great feeling with the car and track combination and on such a tough circuit like Silverstone I feel I managed to take the best out of our package.”

The second race of the weekend, in which Karthikeyan will be aiming for a clean sweep of 1st places, takes place at 13:20 on June 2 and can be watched online (albeit without commentary) is available here.
