Current Auto GP points leader Kimiya Sato has won the second race at Silverstone stopping the domineering Narain Karthikeyan from completing a perfect weekend.
The Super Nova driver, starting on the second row, managed to overtake Ibiza Racing’s Sergio Campana – who eventually finished second – and MP Motorsport’s Meindert van Buuren who finished fourth after penalties were applied.
The penalty was to Race One winner Karthikeyan – he crossed the line fourth but was penalised several places for overtaking Virtuosi UK driver Max Snegirev under a yellow flag.
Rounding out the podium was GP2 regular Kevin Giovesi who gave Ghinzani Motorsport their second podium of the season after getting another third place in the first race at Monza.
Giovesi said after the race: “I immediately found myself well-suited with the Auto GP car and with Team Ghinzani as I went onto the podium for the second time this weekend. After yesterday’s penalty, we had a very good pace on Race 2 and we definitely proved that with a comeback from 13th place. I hope to return to this championship soon.”
Leader Sato, who on 126 points has a 13 point lead over nearest rival Campana, commented: “I’m happy to be back to victory on a tough racetrack like Silverstone. The team got the right strategy for the pit-stop and that enabled us to keep a good pace throughout the whole race. We also scored some very valuable points for the overall standings.”
The next race is just more than a month away at Mugello on July 13/14.
