Ford Take Strong Medal Haul In Munich

1 Mins read

Ford Racing took a pair of strong results at X Games Munich, including a gold medal in the second of the two Global Rallycross races of the weekend.

Thomas Heikkinen took first in the Bluebeam OlsbergsMSE Ford Fiesta ST, also taking his first gold medal of the 2013 season. He was the fastest in qualifying before going on to win his heat by eight seconds. Heikkinen battled with Liam Doran and his OlsbergsMSE team-mate Brian Deegan in the early stages of the final before pulling away from the pack three laps in. The victory meant that Heikkinen now leads the drivers’ championship.

“This race was quite fun for us, it was amazing for Ford,” said Heikkinen. “Liam had the lead around the first corner but after that I tried to catch him and he made a little mistake and I passed him. My spotter told me I was fast and had made a large gap so from there the race was quite simple but it was a fun track.

“I had a big crash last year at X Games and I feel I have grown up this year, even at the last race in Las Vegas last season I think I showed my speed and I think now we are there with a top qualifying time. It was the right day for us and I am so proud to have a gold. In practice my Ford Fiesta ST was the fastest, I am just so happy and I have to say thank you for my OMSE team, Ford and Bluebeam. I owe this one to my family, team and sponsors who had always pushed me.”

Elsewhere in the X Games weekend, Ford also took medals in the form of a Bronze for Tanner Foust in the second race, while the first race of the weekend saw Ken Block take Silver and Thomas Heikkinen take Bronze.
