Formula Renault Racer Thong Wins On LMP2 Debut

1 Mins read

Protyre Formula Renault Championship front-runner Wei Fung Thong switched single-seaters for prototypes this week, the Chinese racer making a winning debut in the Asian Le Mans Series.

Thong piloted an LMP2 Oak Racing Team Total entered Morgan-Judd alongside compatriots Ho-Pin Tung and David Cheng at Zhuhai International Circuit.

The 17 year old contested the middle stint of the race, taking over from Cheng and extending the teams lead to over 26 seconds at front – with Tung going on to bring the car home at the front for the team’s first win of the season.

The team now sit just five points off the championship lead with just one round remaining at Sepang, Malaysia in December.

“It was the first time I raced in endurance and at the wheel of an LMP2 – it was a great experience for me,” said Thong, “The OAK Racing Team Total squad did a fantastic job. During the race I had to concentrate on looking after the tyres. I set a good pace, I managed to be consistent and the team was happy.”

Thong moved to the UK this year to compete in Protyre Formula Renault, with a solid maiden campaign ending with a best finish of fourth during the final weekend at Silverstone.
