Renault UK Clio Cup front-runner James Colburn and Jake Giddings will be flying the flag for the British championship at Motorland Aragon this weekend (2/3 November) during the one-off, winner-takes-all, Dunlop Clio Cup Final.
The British duo will be taking on competitors from various national Clio championships across Europe to try and win the use of a brand new, Dunlop-branded, fourth generation Clio Cup race car for 2014.
Despite no experience of the Spanish circuit, Colburn and Giddings, who will be run by their respective family-run teams Westbourne Motorsport and Finesse Motorsport, are confident of challenging at the sharp end during the weekend’s two races.
“I’ve never seen the circuit, never been to the circuit, and I’m sure there will be a lot of Spanish drivers taking part who will have an advantage with track knowledge,” said Colburn, who finished fourth overall in the UK standings with two race wins. “Hopefully me and Jake [Giddings] can go out there, though, and prove the Renault UK Clio Cup is the best of the national Clio Cup championships.”
“I’d never really heard of Motorland Aragon before to be honest so I’ve researched it on You Tube and looked at some circuit maps,” added Giddings, who was tenth overall this season. “The aim, obviously, is to try and win the new car. It’s a fantastic prize, we want to be in the new Clio in the UK next year so if we can win a car for the new season it’ll go a long way to helping us secure the budget to race Clios again. I’m really looking forward to it.”
