Recently-crowned Renault UK Clio Cup champion Josh Files has wrapped up the 2013 Renault Eurocup Clio title with a convincing win in the penultimate race of the season at Motorland Aragon.
Carrying the momentum and confidence from clinching the UK title at Brands Hatch three weeks ago, Team Pyro’s Files utterly dominated proceedings in Spain.
Topping second practice by over six tenths of a second set the tone for qualifying, with the 22 year old taking pole position for both the weekend’s races with a best time of 2m 17.992s.
An understandably nervy start to the opening race saw the Brit slip to second place as the field surged into turn one. Maintaining a cool head, the Norfolk-based racer bided his time before regaining the advantage at turn three on the second lap.
As Files led the remainder of the race to take his fourth win of the campaign, a ragged second half of the race for chief title rival Massimiliano Pedala saw him drop from fourth to seventh, confirming Files as champion.
“I really wanted this and I was not going to lose that race,” said Files. “While it was a huge thing to win the UK Clio Cup, the Eurocup Clio Championship was the one I desired the most and I wanted to do it in style by winning the race.
“It’s a bit of a cliché to say, but it does mean everything to me. It’s perfect! It’s been a phenomenal year and it feels mega to win a national and European title in the same year.”
Files followed it up with a hard-fought third place finish in the final race of the season, making it a total of 19 podium finishes, including six race wins, from 28 races across the UK and Eurocup championship’s this season.
