Rodrigo Fonseca has been announced as the final piece in the three car puzzle at Douglas Motorsport. The Mexican driver joins his countryman, Diego Menchaca and Irish racer Charlie Eastwood in the team which has features a completely new line up. Only Menchaca has experience of the series, having raced for MGR Motorsport in 2013.
Fonseca started competitive karting three years ago and in that time he has claimed three championship titles. His 2013 season netted the Telmex KR2 Karting Challenge and the Karting Leon category. He also claimed the Karting Leon title in 2012. Fonseca’s pace, if doubted, was confirmed at the end of last year when he finished twelfth of six hundred entrants in the Super Nationals at Las Vegas.
Rodrigo’s BRDC Formula 4 campaign will be his debut in cars where he will be part of the Escuderia Telmex driver development programme which also supports Diego Menchaca.
“This is going to be a year of learning for me as it’s my first season in cars,” he commented. “It’s also going to be a new experience as I’m living away from home for the first time! By the third or fourth round I’d like to be challenging towards the front of the field and at the end of the season I aim be classified as the top rookie.”
Wayne Douglas, team principal at the Rockingham based outfit added, “It’s great to confirm Rodrigo and complete our line-up for this year’s F4 Championship. It’s excellent for Douglas Motorsport and Formula 4 to have another driver from Escuderia Telmex join the series. Rodrigo will be working closely with our engineers throughout the season and we’re confident that he will progress very strongly as the year goes on.”
The news was confirmed at the annual MSV media day at Brands Hatch. Fonseca will make his car racing debut at Silverstone in April when the BRDC Formula 4 Championship gets underway for it’s second year.
