Josh Files kicked off his Renault Eurocup Clio title defence with a podium finish on the opening weekend of the 2014 season at Motorland Aragon, a meeting in which Alex Morgan made his category debut.
Reigning UK and Eurocup champion Files is focusing primarily on defending his Eurocup crown this year, and got his meeting in Spain off to a positive start with the first pole position of the new season, his fifth in a row in the category.
The Team Pyro racer lost the lead off the line at the start of race one, but was soon in the thick of a fierce battle for a podium position. He emerged from a race he described as “hard, physical, tricky but very clean” in second, making it ten podiums in his last thirteen Eurocup races.
The 23 year old’s pole streak came to an end in the second qualifying session of the weekend as he qualified third. The day would get worse too, with contact from a rival spinning him to the back of the field on the opening lap.
Fighting back well though, the reigning champion recovered to ninth at the flag. That puts him fourth in the championship standings, 28 points behind championship leader Oscar Nogues.
For current Renault UK Clio Cup championship leader Morgan, the weekend presented a different challenge to what he’s been used to so far this season. Qualifying seventeenth for race one, the SV Racing ace battled well in the midfield to finish the opener twelfth.
Morgan went an improved thirteenth in the second qualifying session, 1.2 seconds off the pole man. Fighting well in the thick of the midfield battles once again in race two, he went on to following Files across the line to take a top ten finish.
Also running with Team Pyro was fellow UK Clio Cup alumni Finlay Crocker. The Scotsman, who carded a best finish of eleventh in his two seasons in the UK series, converted a pair of 24th place grid starts into two 22nd place finishes in the 26 car field.
