New Zealander Mitch Evans ended up fastest in the first free practice session of the tenth season of the GP2 season at the Bahrain International Circuit. His lap of 1:42.062s ensured that 2013 Teams’ Champions Russian Time began 2014 still on top.
McLaren reserve driver and new ART Grand Prix racer Stoffel Vandoorne was second quickest, 0.062s behind, just ahead of fellow rookie and Ferrari junior driver Raffaele Marciello for Racing Engineering. Hilmer Motorsports driver Daniel Abt was fourth fastest in a session where the top 19 were covered by less than one second.
Monegasque driver Stephane Richelmi was the best placed of the DAMS drivers in fifth, ahead of the first of the EQ8 Caterham Racing entry of Indonesian Rio Haryanto. Their respective team-mates Jolyon Palmer and Alexander Rossi, both regarded as championship contenders this season, ended eighth and seventeenth respectively.
Brazilian Andre Negrao completed his first session as a GP2 driver for Arden International in seventh, while the top ten was rounded out by Rapax driver Simon Trummer in ninth and Venezuelan GP Lazarus driver Conor Daly in tenth.
The session was cut short by two minutes when MP Motorsport driver Daniel de Jong ground to a halt at the exit of turn two with an apparent mechanical failure, causing a red flag.
