German Markus Pommer dominated the second race of the Auto GP World Series event in Morocco with a lights-to-flag victory in his Super Nova International entry. Starting on pole position, he led into the first corner and was never headed, and eventually won the 19-lap race by a commanding 23.615s over yesterday’s race winner Kimiya Sato.
Euronova Racing’s Sato finished second after overtaking Belgian Sam Dejonghe a few laps before the end. Tamas Pal Kiss took third for Zele Racing on the final lap, but unfortunately for Virtuosi UK, Michele La Rosa spun Dejonghe out of fourth place at the very last corner of the race. The Belgians team-mate Andrea Roda inherited fourth place in a sprint to the line with Super Nova’s Michela Cerruti and La Rosa, with the three of them finishing within 0.235s apart.
The final finisher was yesterdays podium finisher Giuseppe Cipriani in seventh, while Dejonghe and Francesco Dracone both retired on the final lap. Earlier in the race, Eurotech’s Kevin Giovesi and Virtuosi UK’s Richard Gonda collided, eliminating both from the event; the incident is under investigation from the stewards. Zele Racing’s Sergio Campana retired at the end of the first lap with gearbox problems. Unfortunately for Loris Spinelli, he didn’t even get that far, the Eurotech driver hitting the barriers midway through the first lap while trying to defend from Dejonghe.
But today was ultimately Pommer’s day, but it will be Kimiya Sato who leaves Morocco with the points lead and the $20,000 bonus for scoring the most points at the event after a win and a second place.
