Sainz Makes it Three-in-Three with Pole at Aragon

Spaniard Carlos Sainz Jr continued his strong start to the 2014 Formula Renault 3.5 Season by claiming his third pole position out of three races at Motorland Aragon. The DAMS driver’s lap of 1:40.418s was enough to see him finish on top, with British rookie Oliver Rowland in second for Fortec Motorsport 0.018s adrift, while the top eighteen drivers were covered by less than a second.

Russian Nikolay Martsenko was third quickest in the sole Comtec Racing entry, ahead of Roberto Merhi in the leading Zeta Corse, while b was an impressive fifth for b. 2013 Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 champion Pierre Gasly was the leading Arden Motorsport driver in sixth.

Marlon Stockinger was seventh for Lotus, the Phillipines driver qualifying just ahead of International Draco Racing’s Pietro Fantin, while Rowland’s Fortec team-mate Sergey Sirotkin was ninth, ahead of yesterday’s practice pace-setter Will Buller in the second Arden machine.

Race one winner of Monza and joint championship leader Will Stevens struggled and qualified fifteenth, and was outqualified by his Strakka Racing team-mate Matias Laine.
