Stanaway Leads Yelloly for Status GP 1-2 at Silverstone

2 Mins read

Richie Stanaway took his first win of the 2014 GP3 Series season and his second win of his GP3 career with victory in race two at Silverstone. He led home Nick Yelloly for a Status Grand Prix 1-2, with Emil Bernstorff completing the podium for Carlin.

Pole sitter Dino Zamparelli of ART Grand Prix made a bad start and dropped down to fifth as Stanaway swept into the lead ahead of the fast-starting Bernstorff and Yelloly. As Bernstorff attempted to pass Stanaway for the lead early in the race, Yelloly took advantage of a slow exit at the Loop and took second place away from his fellow Brit.

Marvin Kirchhofer had a lonely race to fourth for ART Grand Prix, while the battle for fifth went down to the wire, with Riccardo Agostini of Hilmer Motorsport making a great move on Dean Stoneman of Marussia Manor Racing at Copse Corner on the penultimate lap that cost the Briton a place in the points as Zamparelli, Alex Lynn of Carlin and Matheo Tuscher of Jenzer Motorsport all took advantage of a slow corner exit. Stoneman slowed as he approached Maggots and ended the race a lap early in the pits. Lynn made a further place up on the final lap to take sixth away from Zamparelli at Village.

Jann Mardenborough had been a point’s contender for much of the race, but the Arden International driver fell away dramatically as the race reached its conclusion and ultimately dropped down to fifteenth.

Championship contender Jimmy Eriksson of Koiranen GP had a bad start from eighth on the grid and was in the battle for the final point when he collided at Club Corner with Norwegian Pal Varhaug of Jenzer Motorsport and Swiss driver Patric Niederhauser of Arden International that eliminated all three drivers.   With Lynn taking sixth, his championship lead has extended to eight points; with Stanaway’s win closing the gap to Eriksson in second to ten points.

Alex Fontana and Patrick Kujala crashed out at Chapel when the ART Grand Prix driver and the Marussia Manor Racing driver made contact that resulted in both being investigated by the stewards.
