Mike Bushell is looking forward to locking horns with chief title rival Josh Cook in this afternoon’s Renault UK Clio Cup encounter at Rockingham, fresh from taking the championship lead for the first time yesterday (6th September).
Bushell took a dominant four second victory in the opening race of the weekend, Round 15, as erstwhile championship leader Cook hit trouble, and will now line-up alongside him on the front row of the grid for Round 16.
“We’re starting side-by-side, there’s only single digit points between us in the standings, it’s going to be a head to head and I’m really looking forward to it,” Bushell told TCF after race one.
While the Team Pyro racer’s ultimate goal is to win the championship at the season finale at Brands Hatch GP next month, the 25 year old admits that after a “rotten run of luck” that left him forty points adrift after Oulton Park, he’s delighted to have merely dragged himself right back into title contention.
“If you’d have told me three meetings ago, after I’d rolled in qualifying at Oulton Park, that I’d be in this position now I’d have probably laughed in your face,” he added.
“To be in this position, is a real achievement in its own right for me. I’m happy with this so far, and then if it all continues in my favour and I get the rub of the green that that’s fantastic, but at least we’re having a close fight.”
