Aaron Mason took race one victory to close in on championship leader Joe Fulbrook in the Miltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup at Donington Park.
Mason carried on his impressive run of form around the Derbyshire-circuit to take the win from pole, despite much pressure from his front-row partner and championship contender David Sutton early on in proceedings.
Whilst the front two battled, series leader Joe Fulbrook maintained his fourth place off the line, whilst Jack Walker-Tully and James Greenway challenged Sutton for second early on.
However, Walker-Tully’s exploits soon came to an end, with the Crooks & Mason Racing driver suffering a slow puncture and eventual retirement as the race began to reach it’s climax.
Elsewhere, Lucas Orrock, Stefan Di Resta and the fast starting Rob Barrable continued to trade places for sixth seventh and eighth, whilst series leader Joe Fulbrook inherited the fourth place made vacant by Walker-Tully’s demise.
No-one could deny Aaron Mason out front though, with the AmD Tuning racer taking the flag by over a second ahead of Greenway in second, to enhance his efforts of retaining his VW Cup crown.
Brand Hatch winner David Sutton came home third to stay in the title hunt, with Fulbrook maintaining his lead in the series with fourth. Orrock got the better of Di Resta for fifth, however the latter will start today’s race two from pole position on the reverse grid.
Barrable came home a charging seventh from 15th on the grid, with Richard Walker eighth. Team Hard’s Howard Fuller had a great race from twentieth to finish ninth after yesterday’s brake trouble in qualifying. Tom Barley rounded out the top ten.
