Dean Stoneman took his third GP3 Series victory of the season in great fashion at Monza after a great start took him into the lead, and the Marussia Manor Racing driver held off the advances of championship leader Alex Lynn throughout the race to take the spoils.
Lynn’s second place increases his championship lead to fifty points after his closest rival Richie Stanaway was forced to retire while running in the top six with three laps to go with an apparent mechanical failure.
In an exciting opening to the race, pole sitter Matheo Tuscher and fellow front row starter Patrick Kujala made mediocre starts, with Stoneman, Lynn and Emil Bernstorff sliding into the top three at the first corner ahead of Tuscher, while Marvin Kirchhofer took fifth from Kujala.
Lynn took the battle to Stoneman and was never far away from his fellow Briton’s rear wing, and whilst an overtaking attempt saw Bernstorff briefly take second place away from his Carlin team-mate, Lynn was never more than a second away from Stoneman up front.
ART Grand Prix driver Kirchhofer took advantage of a mistake by Bernstorff to take the final podium position in third, while Nick Yelloly claimed fifth for Status Grand Prix. Team-mate Stanaway was on course for sixth but for his late retirement, with Kevin Ceccon inheriting that position and securing his first points of the season for Jenzer Motorsport since returning to GP3.
Luis Sa Silva had one of his strongest races of the season to finish seventh in the third Carlin machine, while race one winner Jimmy Eriksson claimed the final point on the final for Koiranen GP in a great battle with Sa Silva, Dino Zamparelli and Alex Fontana, with all four drivers being in the points at some point on the final lap.
Front row starters Tuscher and Kujala both retired after a collision between the two at the second chicane saw the Finn retire on the spot, while Tuscher was forced into the pits with the risk of a penalty hanging over him.
