Cypriot racer Tio Ellinas will move into the Formula Renault 3.5 Series in 2015 after signing to race for Strakka Racing.
The twenty-three-year-old joins Swede Gustav Malja in an all-new rookie line-up for the team, having raced sparingly in the GP2 Series during 2014, racing in Spain, Monaco and Austria for MP Motorsport before a one-off appearance for Rapax in Russia. He had been a championship contender in the GP3 Series in 2013 with Marussia Manor Racing, winning twice.
Ellinas tested with Strakka Racing at the end-of-season tests in Jerez last autumn, and now joins Strakka’s driver management division on a long-term contract.
“We worked really well at the Young Driver Test and it was clear that Strakka could engineer a quick car in both the wet and dry,” says Ellinas. “Strakka is the complete package with the best support and equipment, on and off the track.”
Team Principal Dan Walmsley believes his team have signed a very naturally talented driver in Ellinas, and hopes to exploit the potential in 2015.
“In Tio, we see a driver with fantastic natural talent and the ability to work hard and learn,” said Walmsley. “Managing him, means that we can unleash and guide the potential he obviously has.”
“Gustav and Tio gives us a great line up and we are extremely confident we can improve on our Championship standings from last year.”
