Brett Smith, son of British Touring Car Championship racer Jeff, will move into the Renault UK Clio Cup this season with reigning champions Team Pyro.
Smith finished runner-up in the 2013 Mazda MX-5 Championship before making his Clio racing debut in the Michelin Clio Cup Series last year.
Joining the grid midway through the season with Pyro, Smith took a race win on his debut weekend at Donington Park, with a total of seven podium finishes in eight race starts securing him fifth in the standings.
Smith will now follow in his father’s footsteps by competing in the BTCC-supporting Clio Cup, with Jeff having competed in the series between 2008 and 2010.
Despite it being his first season, Brett Smith is heading into the 2015 season with a title challenge firmly in his sights as Pyro hope to add to their impressive record in the championship.
“Who better to do it with than Pyro who have won the title six times in the last seven years?” said Smith. “I won on my first weekend in the club Clio Series with them and we’ve had a strong relationship since 2007 when my dad raced for them in the Clio Cup.
“I’m coming in to win races and go for the title. I’d be very disappointed if I’m not in the top three. Mazdas really got me used to having lots of cars in close proximity which is something that you need to be able to handle in the Clio Cup – I’m up for a bit of a fight.”
