Sutton “Very Happy” With First BMR Clio Tests

1 Mins read

Single-seater convert Ashley Sutton has described himself as “very happy” with his first testing outings in his Team BMR Renault UK Clio Cup car.

Sutton got his first taste of the fourth-generation Clio in mixed conditions at Thruxton last month, following that up with a two day test at Snetterton and then two days this week at Oulton Park.

“It took me about ten laps of Thruxton to adapt to the Clio Cup car and from there on I just kept learning more and more every time I left the pit lane,” said the 21 year old.

Whilst Snetterton isn’t on the Clio Cup calendar for 2015, Sutton says the test there was a key opportunity to get more seat time.

“The track was much clearer than at Thruxton and we had 2014’s race event times to benchmark ourselves against. I don’t want to give too much away except to say I was very happy with our times, especially in race trim,” Sutton explained.

“Snetterton has a lot of different types of corner in it so we know if we can set competitive times around there then we should have a good base set-up.”

For Sutton, who starred in Formula Ford GB last year with five wins, the Clio is very different to what he’s racing before, but he feels he’s getting to grips with it well ahead of the opening rounds at Brands Hatch on April 4/5.

“I absolutely love the car,” he concluded. “It’s a bit different to what I’m used to and at first I had to get used to how it moves about and to keep my foot in when if it goes a bit sideways instead of lifting off which you do with rear-wheel-drive!

It’s important to get as much seat time in the car between now and the start of the season – we’re only a month away.”
