Matthieu Vaxiviere sent another warning signal to the rest of the Formula Renault 3.5 Series field by posting the fastest time on the final day of pre-season testing at the Motorland Aragon circuit in Spain.
On a day dedicated to low-downforce set-ups, Frenchman Vaxiviere was once again the only driver to dip below 1m41s, with the Lotus driver’s morning time of 1m40.662s beating Tio Ellinas of Strakka Racing by 0.421s.
The top five all set their fastest times in the morning, with the two Fortec Motorsport drivers, Oliver Rowland and Jazeman Jaafar, third and fifth, sandwiching the AVF machine of Beitske Visser.
Dean Stoneman was the quickest driver on track in the afternoon session, with the DAMS driver setting a time of 1m41.273s that saw him finish sixth overall on Tuesday.
Tom Dillmann was seventh in the sole Jagonya Ayam with Carlin machine present on day two, with team-mate Sean Geleal back in Britain to sit some exams. The second Lotus of Meindert van Buuren was eighth, while 2014 Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 Series champion Nyck de Vries was ninth for DAMS, ahead of Strakka’s Gustav Malja.
Many drivers concentrated on set-up and long runs during the day, including Pons Racing duo Roberto Merhi and Philo Paz Patric Armand. Facu Regalia returned to the Zeta Corse seat in place of Roman Mavlanov, who had tested with the team on Monday.
The next time the teams will take to the track will be for the opening round of the season, at Motorland Aragon, over the weekend of 24-26 April.
