Double Renault Clio Cup champion Josh Files has signed up to compete in the Renault Clio Cup Italia this season, and got his campaign off to a perfect start with victory on the opening weekend of the season at Imola.
Files signed a late deal to enter the championship with front-running outfit Rangoni Corse, the move continuing an association with Renault Clio racing that stretches back in 2011, incorporating three seasons in the UK series and a season and a half in the Eurocup championship.
The 24 year old secured both the UK Clio Cup and Eurocup Clio titles in 2013 with Team Pyro, before electing for just a Eurocup defence last season that he ended after one podium finish in four races.
Files’ Italia season got off to a superb start at Imola this past weekend. After sitting in the top two in both free practice sessions he posted the third best time in qualifying, before following up a sixth place finish in race one with a great drive to victory in race two.
Commenting on the weekend, Files said: “From race one where my car seemed to have a target attached to it and I was fired off not once but twice, I am over the moon to give Rangoni Corse the win we deserved in race two and to come from sixth on the grid makes it worth so much more!”
Despite the Clio Cup Italia deal, Files has told TCF that he remains part of the #RacingforHeroes project, for which he was initially announced to be competing in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB.
As TCF revealed a couple of weeks ago, funding issues have left Files and three other drivers off their grids at present, but Files has said that plans are still in motion for a possible entry into the Carrera Cup later this season.
