Sutton dominates VW Cup season opener

David Sutton took an impressive lights-to-flag victory in race one of the 2015 Volkswagen Racing Cup, to kick-start his season in the best possible way at Oulton Park.

After taking pole position in the morning qualifying session, Sutton enjoyed a calm and controlled drive to take the first chequered flag of the season for SlideSports by 2.290 seconds ahead of Aaron Mason in second.

Unlike most VW Cup races, proceedings began in an orderly manner, with the blend of Scirocco’s and Golf’s negotiating New Hall with ease at the first time of asking, as pole-man Sutton led Team HARD’s Howard Fuller around the 2.7 mile track. Elsewhere, Phil House endured a torrid start from third, immediately dropping through the pack, whilst 2013 series champion Mason rose to third.

Out of frame in qualifying, reigning champion Joe Fulbrook put in a champions drive early on to enter the top ten, before picking off the likes of Jack Walker-Tully and Lee Allen en route to a top six finish. Not enjoying such luck was Chris Panayiotou, who fell from fifth before retiring with mechanical issues one lap from the end.

Out front though was the dominant-Sutton, who after setting the fastest lap of the race three times in succession, managed to hold off Mason, who himself had managed to dispose Fuller of second mid-race.

Rounding off the podium was Fuller, who finished just a tenth ahead of an insistent Lucas Orrock in fourth. Joe McMillan rounded out the top five, with Fulbrook, Allen, Walker-Tully, Thompson and House completing the top ten.
