Rowland eases to race two win in Spa-Francorchamps

1 Mins read

Oliver Rowland controlled race two at Spa-Francorchamps from start to finish to take his second victory of the 2015 Formula Renault 3.5 Series season.

The British Racing Steps Foundation-backed Fortec Motorsports driver led away from pole position and was never headed until the chequered flag, even surviving a light rain shower that threatened to interfere with the race during the pit stop window.

Although the rain eventually came to nothing, the race for the final podium places were fought until the end, with Nyck de Vries equalling his best finish of his short FR3.5 Series career in second ahead of a charging Matthieu Vaxiviere, with the Lotus driver unable to pass the DAMS driver despite pressuring the McLaren Junior driver for the last handful of laps.

Vaxiviere had earlier passed impressively both Tio Ellinas and Dean Stoneman after his pit stop before putting the pressure on de Vries.

Stoneman finished fourth for DAMS ahead of Ellinas of Strakka Racing, who survived a last lap lunge at the Bus Stop chicane from Jazeman Jaafar, who had climbed up from the back of the grid following a post-qualifying penalty for a technical infringement.

Aurélien Panis secured seventh for Tech 1 Racing, finishing on the tail of the battle for fourth, as did Pietro Fantin of International Draco Racing in eighth, while Egor Orudzhev of Arden Motorsport and Meindert van Buuren of Lotus completed the points scorers.

Two of the contenders for points were forced out of contention on the opening lap when Nicholas Latifi of Arden Motorsport and Tom Dillmann of Jagonya Ayam with Carlin clashed on the exit of Eau Rouge, breaking the Canadian driver’s front wing and giving the Frenchman a puncture.
