James Colburn is making a return to the Renault UK Clio Cup grid this weekend at Thruxton, replacing Freddie Hunt at Bubble and Kick Racing.
With Hunt on ambassadorial duties for Formula E in Monaco, Colburn will take his spot for the visit to the high-speed Hampshire circuit, which the experienced Clio racer has won three times at – once last season alongside a double victory in 2012.
Colburn announced at the start of the season that he would be stepping back from competing in the Clios after a six season spell in the category, but admits the chance to return at his local circuit was one he couldn’t pass up.
“I’m going into this looking to win. I’m there to represent myself and BKR as best as I can so won’t be making it easy for people,” said Colburn.
“I’ve not driven in anger since 2014’s final rounds (last October) but hopefully the same set-up that I used at Thruxton last year will work this time as well.
“Of course it’s never that simple! There is a new Dunlop tyre compound for this year but from what I can make out it should suit my driving style as it provides greater front-end grip on the car. I’ll also be going into Saturday’s qualifying session cold having missed the official test a few weeks ago.”
Bubble and Kick meanwhile, who are competing in the Clio Cup for the first time this season, hope to utilise Colburn’s experience as they continue to develop their car.
“Naturally we are delighted to have James in our car – we are all learning as a team new to the championship and I am sure he will help us come on in terms of performance this weekend,” added BKR team principal Nico Ferrari.
