David Sutton claimed both of the pole positions on offer from the Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup’s qualifying session at Rockingham.
The SlideSports Scirocco driver made his intentions on the top spot clear early in the 20 minute session around the Northamptonshire track’s International Super Sports Car Long track, but was under pressure throughout from those behind.
Only with a lap of 1:36.083 was he able to build enough of an advantage to look comfortable, though even then late improvements from champion Joe Fulbrook were enough to force him to return to the track having come into the pits with five minutes still remaining. Fulbrook’s late move up the order brought him up as high as third behind Sutton and Lucas Orrock.
His session got off to an inauspicious start, spinning at the Tarzan hairpin in the early stages, but with no damage (though he forced one following driver in avoiding action) he was able to continue. Just after the half way session he took provisional pole with a lap of 1:36.636. He was unable to improve upon that mark in the remaining minutes as Sutton first took pole with the lap (1:36.241) that was give him pole for the weekend’s third race, then lowered the target time to move a half second clear before pitting.
Joe McMillan was another to briefly hold the fastest time during the session en route to taking fourth fastest ahead of Jack Walker-Tully. Aaron Mason was sixth fastest.
Fulbrook’s late move up the order was further rewarded with the second on the race three grid, decided by the second fastest lap time from the session. He will again be the only Golf driver in the top half dozen.
Walker-Tully and McMillan will share the second row for the weekend’s finale with Orrock fifth ahead of Mason, sixth again.
