Luca Ghiotto claimed his second consecutive GP3 Series pole position after a stunning lap in the closing stages helped him secure top spot at the Red Bull Ring.
Qualifying was a dramatic affair with several drivers including Alex Palou, Mitch Gilbert, Marvin Kirchhofer and championship leader Esteban Ocon, swapping fastest times throughout the session.
Trident driver Ghiotto slowly but surely made his way up the order after a slow start to qualifying and held provisional pole at the midway point of the session.
Several drivers jumped to top spot before Ocon asserted his challenge with the fastest time in the closing stages. This however didn’t last long, as Ghiotto strung together a superb lap to secure pole position, with a time of 1m19.55s, two tenths clear of Ocon.
Palou will line up third despite a spin and a scrape with the barrier at the final corner in the latter stages of the session.
Kirchhofer held on to fourth ahead of Emil Bernstorff and Koiranen GP’s Matt Parry in sixth.
Sandy Stuvik, Jimmy Eriksson and Carlin driver Gilbert rounded out the top 10.
After a promising free-practice session where he set the pace, Jann Mardenborough could only manage to qualify in 12th position, behind both of his team-mates.
Oscar Tunjo also had a session to forget. He ended up down in 17th after spending the majority of the session in the pitlane.
