Binder in at Pons as Merhi calls time on FR3.5 campaign

1 Mins read

Roberto Merhi will no longer compete in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series in 2015 after leaving Pons Racing to focus purely on his Formula 1 commitments with the Manor F1 Team.

The Spaniard missed the last round of the championship at Silverstone last weekend due to his commitments with Manor at Monza, but will now miss the remaining races at the Nurburging, Le Mans and Jerez.

Austrian Rene Binder will join up with Pons Racing for this weekend’s round at the Nurburgring in Germany, and will be a part of an all-new driver line-up alongside Japanese racer Yu Kanamaru, who was announced previously to be racing in place of Philo Paz Patric Armand.

Binder has been racing in the GP2 Series this season, originally for Trident but more recently for MP Motorsport, and secured his first two points finishes of the season last weekend at Monza.

“For Pons Racing, having the chance to count on Binder is a privilege, no doubt on that,” said Team Manager Emilio de Villota.

“René has been racing in the GP2 Series for the last three and a half years and I think he’ll provide us with the experience we need to continue our progression. I can’t wait to work with him at a challenging track like the Nurburgring this weekend.”
