Former Ginetta Junior Scholarship winner Alex Sedgwick will make his Renault UK Clio Cup debut later this month at Silverstone.
The 16 year old will join the grid with Team Cooksport for his first ever race meeting in front-wheel-drive machinery, having only raced in French Formula 4 since leaving Juniors at the end of last season.
Sedgwick was the Scholarship winner for last year’s Junior season, with a strong maiden car-racing campaign seeing him secured five top six finishes with a best result of fourth. He made his French F4 debut last month at Magny-Cours, impressing with a top ten finish.
“I’m really excited to be joining the Clio Cup grid at Silverstone. It’s going to be very different for me – in fact it will be the first time I’ve raced anything front-wheel-drive,” said Sedgwick, who receives support from BTCC ace Adam Morgan.
“Hopefully I’ll be on the pace after the two Friday test sessions for qualifying on the Saturday. It is super competitive so clearly I’m not going there thinking about wins or podiums – instead I’m after a couple of solid results and to build my experience of the car, hopefully before doing the season finale at Brands Hatch too and a full season next year.”
Sedgwick joins Cooksport in a positive time for the team, with a seasons best outing at Rockingham last weekend seeing Sedgwick’s new team-mates Rory Collingbourne and George Jackson both take career best fourth place finishes.
Cooksport team principal and BTCC podium finisher Josh Cook commented: “Everyone at Team Cooksport is really pleased to have another young talent join the team. Despite being the youngest driver on the Clio Cup grid, Alex is very mature and already an accomplished driver. I’m looking forward to working with him and watching him succeed in the Clio Cup.”
At just 16 years, seven months and ten days old when he takes part in the two races, Sedgwick will usurp Rockingham debutant Josh Price as the youngest driver on the grid this season.
