Dillmann secures maiden FR3.5 pole in Jerez

1 Mins read

Tom Dillmann secured his first pole position of the season for race one of the final weekend of the Formula Renault 3.5 Series at Jerez on Saturday.

The Jagonya Ayam with Carlin driver set the pace with a time of 1m28.621s in a session twice affected by red flags due to stoppages for Alfonso Celis Jr and Dean Stoneman.

Dillmann will be joined on the front row by 2015 champion Oliver Rowland, with the Racing Steps Foundation-backed Fortec Motorsports driver ending 0.124s back, and had a brief off through the gravel trap in the closing moments of the session.

Jazeman Jaafar made it two Fortec entries inside the top three, with the Malaysian driver being joined on the second row by Lotus driver Matthieu Vaxiviere.

Tio Ellinas was late to join the session following an issue with his Strakka Racing car but was able to qualify fifth, with McLaren Junior driver Nyck de Vries sixth for DAMS.

The second Strakka of Gustav Malja was seventh ahead of Arden Motorsport’s Nicholas Latifi, with Beitske Visser of AVF and Yu Kanamaru of Pons Racing completing the top ten.

Stoneman had set the fourth fastest time before his spin into the gravel trap, but the Red Bull-backed DAMS driver lost his fastest time as a result of causing the red flag.

Another driver to lose their best time was Friday pacesetter Egor Orudzhev, who had set the third quickest time in the closing stages only to have the lap deleted due to improving his time under yellow flags.
