Sandell on pole as Barbados weekend gets underway

Patrik Sandell made his championship ambitions known yesterday by clinching pole position for the first part of the Red Bull Global Rallycross double header event at Bushy Park Circuit in Barbados.

The Swede beat the Volkswagen pairing of Scott Speed and Tanner Foust to the top spot, setting a fastest time of 1m02.982s.

Brian Deegan beat fellow M-Sport Fiesta runners Austin Dyne and Ken Block to fourth with Nelson Piquet Jr., Joni Wiman, Steve Arpin and Sebastian Eriksson rounding out the top ten.

On his return to the Red Bull GRC fold, Rhys Millen qualified in eleventh with a fastest time of 1m05.025s around the record-long Bushy Park lap.

The New Zealander was ahead of Sverre Isachsen, the Norwegian the sole Subaru runner this weekend – in last year’s car too – with the Vermont Sports Car-run team continue the development of their new WRX STi platform.

The action continues today and tomorrow with Barbados I concluding this afternoon. The full second event of the weekend will take place tomorrow.
