Darren Johnson will be making his Renault UK Clio Cup debut this season after signing a deal to contest selected events with reigning champions Team Pyro.
Johnson, who turns 50 this week, has experience competing in the older third generation Clio Cup car, racing one to class wins in Britcar and the Classic Sports Car Championship.
Alongside that, Johnson made a one-off outing in the Michelin Clio Cup Series last season, with impressive seventh and fourth place finishes at Oulton Park.
The Kidderminster-based racer is targeting class wins in the Masters Cup this season, as he plans to use 2016 as a warm-up ahead of a full UK Clio Cup season in 2017.
“Work commitments mean I can probably only do Donington Park, Oulton Park, Rockingham and Silverstone although there could be more,” said Johnson.
“There’s no way I expect to be challenging the younger guys at the front, but I hope to be the first Masters driver across the line on a few occasions. That’d be nice. I’ll still be attending the other events and am very much treating this year as a ‘recce’ for 2017.”
Johnson will race alongside the reigning Masters Cup champion Mark Howard at Pyro, as well as outright 2014 champion Mike Bushell and rising stars Josh Price and Senna Proctor.
