Coates Stars At Donington Park With Maiden Clio Pole

In only his second race meeting in the series, Max Coates has topped the timesheets in qualifying for Rounds Three and Four of the 2016 Renault UK Clio Cup at Donington Park.

The Ciceley Motorsport ace led home championship leader Lee Pattison by two tenths of a second for race one pole, while Ant Whorton-Eales set the best second fastest time for race two pole.

In a close fought session that saw the top nineteen cars split by less than a second, Coates emerged on top with a 1m 17.482s effort to take his and the Ciceley teams maiden Clio Cup pole.

Pattison just edged out Whorton-Eales to complete the front row, three hundredths of a second splitting them, with Paul Rivett, Paul Streather and Charlie Ladell in close pursuit.

Just missing out on the top six was Mike Bushell, the former champion less than half a second slower than Coates’ best ahead of George Jackson, David Dickenson and Ollie Pidgley.

For race two, Pattison will once again line up on the front row alongside poleman Whorton-Eales, with Rivett in third – the top three split by less than a tenth of a second.

Behind Streather, Jackson is an improved fifth ahead of Coates, with Bushell once again seventh ahead of Ladell, Luke Kidsley and Daniel Rowbottom, the latter having moved to Finesse on the eve of the meeting.

In the Masters Cup meanwhile, it’s a double class pole position for Graham Field ahead of Darren Johnson and Craig Milner.
