2015 Belgian Rallycross Champion Jochen Coox has confirmed to RX-Inside.be that he will part of a 30 strong Supercar entry for the 2016 FIA European Rallycross Championship opening round at Mettet in Belgium.
Coox, who secured his 2015 crown in a Volkswagen Scirocco Supercar, purchased the ex-Tommy Rustad Marklund Motorsport Supercar for 2016 and began the year well by winning the first round of this years Belgian RX. He then followed this up by competing at Lydden Hill in Kent for what was Round Two of both the British Rallycross Championship and the Belgian Championship.
The Belgian driver made his goal clear for 2016 earlier this year that the Belgian Championship is his main focus, however there are other circuits he also wishes to compete on:
“I think we have an extremely good car with the VW Polo. A car with which I am able compete with the best in European Rallycross. Let me be clear that we remain faithful to the Belgian championship, but in addition we would consider attending some European events as well,” Coox explained.
“The race in Höljes has long been on my wish list, as well as the event for the home crowd in Mettet. We will see where we stand, but let’s wait and see whether we are actually allowed to appear on the grid.”
With his entry now granted for the opening round of Euro RX, Coox is excited about the challenge ahead:
“This is obviously crazy news! 30 Supercars in Euro RX means it will be hard to fight for a spot in the Finals. I go there with not too much to think about. The purpose of the weekend is compete with the top drivers and also to have fun.
“However we cannot damage the car as on the following Monday it is the third round of the Belgian Rallycross Championship. For now I’m happy with this news. I want to say a big thank you to my sponsors who have made this possible!”
