Patrik Sandell topped the opening practice session of the 2016 Red Bull Global Rallycross season at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Phoenix, Arizona.

The Swede lapped the 0.929 mile circuit in 49.296 seconds, just over a tenth of a second faster than defending series champion Scott Speed.

“P1 in first practice, [It’s a] good feeling!” said Sandell. “I am so happy for everything that was done over the winter, the car is perfect!”

Speed’s Volkswagen Andretti team mate Tanner Foust was in third, a 0.172 seconds behind Sandell while Brian Deegan was fourth fastest on his return to the series. Steve Arpin rounded out the top five in the other Chip Ganassi Racing Ford Fiesta.

The new Honda Civics of Joni Wiman and Sebastian Eriksson were sixth and seventh fastest ahead of Jeff Ward and Austin Dyne in what was his first outing for his own team.

Rhys Millen rounded out the runners in tenth place while series débutante Sebastian Saavedra failed to set a time.
