Antonio Giovinazzi was delighted with his Baku weekend after doing the rare double GP2 Series victory around the street circuit in Azerbaijan.
The double victory has been performed just seven times in the history of GP2, and Giovinazzi now joins a strong list that includes Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg, Nico Hülkenberg, Giorgio Pantano and Davide Valsecchi.
The Prema Racing driver was able to claim his second victory of the weekend despite a dreadful start due to a technical issue on his car that quickly cleared itself, and the Italian then made his way forward, avoiding the chaos of the safety car restarts before passing team-mate Pierre Gasly at turn one on the final lap.
“It’s been a fantastic weekend, first in qualifying, race 1, race 2, fastest lap, what I could ask more,” said Giovinazzi. “Today, the start hasn’t been perfect as I had a problem with the engine but then I made it up and fought back to second place.
“I thought that it was already a good race to me and it was great for Pierre to be leading after starting P18. Then I got a good exit at the last corner, kept to the outside and then he locked-up so I managed to pass him. It’s a great result for the Prema team.
“Now we are also in a really good position in the championship although I don’t want to think about it too much. We will try to line-up for the next round super-prepared as we were here.
“It will be tough to repeat this weekend’s results but we will try to stay at the front and we’ll see what the Red Bull Ring will bring”.
